SPONSORED POST: AAUA RANKED BEST STATE UNIVERSITY: THE HOPE AND HARDSHIP OF THE POOR MASSES TO STUDY IN ONDO STATE TERTIARY INSTITUTION

Published

on

The recent development in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, corresponding with the latest Webometrics Ranking of World Universities released on the 31st of July, 2019 had drawn every Tom, Dick and Harry of the noble institution to a reaction which confirms how long the feat was anticipated to be achieved. The attainment of AAUA among other universities of the World, in Africa and in Nigeria as a whole to become; the best state University and number nine(9) best University in Nigeria, number eighty-one (81) in Africa and now three thousand and forty-eight(3048) out of over twenty-eight thousand(28,000) institutions ranked in the world is indeed a great feat to be celebrated in the history of the university.

However, as it is well known that Rome wasn’t built in a day, it should as well be noted that the crown of laurel recently won by the University is a manifestation of long time legacies laid and productive policies formulated by past regimes both at the state level and the university community up to what has befallen us as a present. It is not likened to a dream dreamt over a quick night rest that’s became a reality by the morning. Adekunle Ajasin University had long been a well-structured university producing students who are capable of competing with other counterparts from universities cut across spheres. Until recently, AAUA was considered the best choice for all strata within the social ladder.

You know, I often hear people say it is possible for someone to be reached with good news and yet still not joyous, especially when such news fails to positively condition the situation in question. The news of high-rating AAUA by Webometrics established this fact. Yes, is it not astonishing to see majority of the students who were ordinarily expected to fly in wild jubilation go about playing doubting Thomases or nevertheless relaying non concern. The reason behind this was simple— It is not possible for a man to whistle and still twist his nose at the same time. It is a great deal ranking AAUA the best university in Nigeria, but what joy does this bring to a people who in quest of acquiring higher education in an institution but cannot afford an outrageous fees hike?

The fact that the great citadel of learning becomes the best among its counterparts cannot be in any way related to the astronomical increment of its tuition fee. It is not claimable. The institution had been improving before the emergence of the government of the day, who could not find anything else but education to become a source of generating revenue in the state. The institution had been passing through stages of development before the imposition of the burden of running the university on the poor masses and it is a coincidence that the fruit of past labor on the institution is coming after the governor carried out the strain up policy against the people who brought him to power.

In a country like Nigeria—where the means of sustainability for livelihood is not much available, where economic development is retarded and where few resources available is not used effectively to ameliorate the hardship of the masses—getting educated is not with the consideration of enrolling in the best ones but the affordable. Yet, the obvious truth is that AAUA was once affordable and also among the best. Before 2018, with a fee range of #23,000 to #45,000, AAUA students have won several prices at home and abroad notable of which is Akeem Longe, a first class graduate at AAUA, Overall Best Student in the Nigerian Law School 2014. Winter Williams prize winner in Oxford University. Among the dependable, resourceful and responsible individuals in our society today you will find products of AAUA, part of who are retained in the university till today, But sadly, some of them are even defending the unyielding policy of the government. Prior to the sudden occurrence of the school fees, school facilities were more improved. For instance, the gigantic edifice which today serves as the Senate Building of the institution is one of the best in Nigeria and it was built before the outrageous increment fee was carried out. Electricity was more stable on campus, as with a fee range of #23,000 to #45,000 AAUA Campus enjoyed 8am-4pm power supply. Now, with the introduction of the new #150,000, power supply on campus is now between 10am to 2pm. Increment did not lead to improvement.

The reality here today is how fast the Ondo State Tertiary institutions, most especially Adekunle Ajasin University, a public institution, is falling out of the real purpose behind its establishment, The vision of the founding father of the university, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, was to ensure Ondo State indigenes enjoy quality education at an affordable fee in a bid to develop the state. Past Governors upheld this vision until a man who never sees himself as fortunate to enjoy the free education policy of Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and who in a bid of becoming the governor of Ondo State in 2012 deceived the electorates and quoted thus, *”I know the importance of education. Although some States increased fees because they have no money, God has blessed us with oil wealth in Ondo State. Therefore, I say today that my government will not increase tuition fees”.* How wide is the yawning gap between promises and performances!

Except for wickedness, no man will ever see his fellow human being struggling with the hardship he imposed and still never feel remorseful thereby limiting it, if it can’t be totally reversed. Now in the fourth week of academic calendar, many students are still staying back at home for no other reason than financial incapability. Many are the students who have to withdraw just because the hope of acquiring hike cost education is vague. Many are those who will have to venture in cybercrime and illegalities just because the government policy is not encouraging their situation. What about those helpless students who would not resume to school except a test is coming up or examination starts, because they are sponsoring themselves and must hustle for the money?

Finally, let it be known that AAUA is not becoming the best with the hike tuition fee being paid, it can only become the best if serves the general public in accordance with the real purpose of its establishment. Former Governor of Ondo, Olusegun Mimiko ruled for complete eight(8) years without bringing up problems against over fifteen thousand(15,000) students in AAUA and many of them passed out to become responsible members of the society. What is even the essence of studying costly, yet after graduating, there is massive unemployment in the country. These issues can still be addressed. The outrageous increment of the tuition fees will continue to be a topical issue. Students and parents are not calling for a total reversal of the tuition fees to the previous, but there should be a reasonable decrease in the present. Arakunrin Odunayo Akeredolu can still rebuild his reputation now, or have himself judged by posterity.

Although “Essence” did not receive the much desired nomination in the category for “Record of the Year” at the 2022 Grammy Awards, it did get a nod for Best Global Music Performance, the first of its kind.

Irrespective of the snub, Nicki whilie on Joe Budden TV (YouTube) as a guest on the special episode tagged A Conversation With Nicki Minaj & Joe Budden agreed with the host (Joe Budden) when he said “We need people on the Grammy board that know that “Essence” was song of the year” with an exclamatory “Right! Right!” response. She even proffered, “We should have our own Grammy Board“, in support of many and the popular believe that Black Americans or black artistes in general are always stereotyped to a particular category at the award show, if indeed they made it to the top categories, they barely win; Nicki Minaj does not have a Grammy Award herself and that is still a shock to many, especially when considering her refined catalogue of music.
