Nigerians in the US to sow ‘Aso-Ebi’ for presidential inauguration

A few Nigerians living in the United States have planned a unique clothing, prominently called “Aso Ebi”, to be won on Wednesday, January 20 for the initiation of Joe Biden and Harris Kamala as President and Vice President of the US individually.

In a video that surfaced internet demonstrating the clothing, Biden and Harris’ names were engraved on the Aso Ebi flaunted by two Nigerian men. The clothing additionally had their photos and a caption, ‘victory party’.

The Nigerians, whose personality couldn’t be discovered as of the hour of recording this report, said they were taking theirs to tailor.

One of the joyous Nigerians said, “So, Aso Ebi is ready now. Can you see this? It is ready. I am taking mine to the tailor for the inauguration.”

Another Nigerian, who spoke in Yoruba, said, “We will rock this. We will sweep away all those with negative mindsets out of the white house.”

The term aso ebi is begat from two Yoruba words – aso signifying ‘material’ and ebi, which signifies ‘family’. It is a uniform dress that is generally worn as a methods for recognizable proof for family members at weddings, burial services, and different festivals as a type of help and fortitude.

It is produced using various clothing types, for example, Ankara, Lace, Guinea among others.

Tems gets nominated for BET ‘Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act’

Temilade Openiyi, popularly called Tems has bagged a nomination in the category for Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act at the forthcoming BET Awards 2021.

Tems released her first single in 2018 with her first EP, “For Broken Ears” arriving in the second-half of 2020 but her big break on the international scene came through Wizkid featuring her on “Essence” from his recent album, “Made In Lagos” for which video has been shot and it is easily one the fans favourite.

Tems is nominated in the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act category alongside stars who got their major music break in 2020 like Arlo Parks and Bree Runway from the United Kingdom, Elaine (South Africa) amongst others in a female-studded group with the only male nominee being Bramsito from France.

Wizkid and Burna receive BET Awards nod

Nigerian music lords, Ayodeji “Wizkid” Balogun and Damini “Burna Boy” Ogulu are once again favourite to win the well contested Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards 2021 in the category they are nominated. They have been put in the Best International Act alongside top music acts like Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), Headie One (UK), Youssoupha (France) and a few others.

Wizkid and Burna Boy are no strangers to being nominated for the BET Awards, as they have both won the honours in 2012 and 2017 (for Wizkid) and 2019 and 2020 (for Burna Boy), a joint record for the most wins by an African act nominated for the Best International Act at the BET Awards while Wizkid edges Burna Boy for the most overall wins – three (3) – in total, including 2020’s win for the BET Her Awards for being featured on “Black Skin Girl”, making Wizkid the record holder for most wins by an African act nominated for the event.

The BET Awards is set to air live on Sunday June 28th at the Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles, California, United States of America. This will be its 21st edition.

Despite 2020 heavily being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wizkid’s Made In Lagos and Burna Boy’s Twice As Tall were released, with the latter earning him the Grammys for “Best Global Album” while Wizkid’s involvement on Beyoncé’s “Black Skin Girl” was enough for the “Best Music Video” at the same Grammys award. Their albums also topped many charts across the globe, creating numerous records along the line.

Their collaborative stronghold was inevitably noticed on “Ginger” from Wizkid’s Made In Lagos album, easily becoming a fans favourite. It is no surprise, both of them are nominated for this year’s edition of the BET Awards.

Burna Boy nominated alongside The Weeknd, Childish Gambino for ‘Best International Male Solo Artist’ at the BRITs 2021

Burna Boy receives nomination nod from British Record Industry Trusts Show (BRITs), an annual show, awarding excellence in music. Burna Boy is nominated among other industry big cats for the role of ‘Best International Male Solo Artist’ for having an outstanding and fulfilling year in music for the year 2020.

Burna Boy is pitched against top artistes in Canadian R&B and Pop megastar, The Weeknd, rapper and singer, Childish Gambino, Australian band, Tame Impala and American music veteran, Springsteen in the category aforementioned.

This year’s nomination makes for a back-to-back nomination of Burna Boy for ‘Best International Male Solo Artist’ and makes for three total nomination for the African Giant at the UK held award show, adding last year’s nomination of featured track—“Location”—by Dave.

Burna Boy also holds the record for the most nominated African based artist at the BRITs with 3.
