Spotify 2020 Wrapped: Most Streamed Nigerian Albums

Published

on

2020 gave us music. Everything went south since the infamous Covid-19 hit centre stage and in no due time broke the record, becoming the most sold and shutdown show ever in human history. But if there was something that at least stood the test of times this difficult year, it is our Nigerian music industry continually chuning out hits, classics and music that will forever be dear to us – the fans and listeners.

Spotify, one of the most used music streaming platforms in the world, despite not having a branch in Nigeria and the website being inaccessible in the country (unless you use VPN of course) favoured our Nigerian music industry and its artistes.

Spotify released their yearly “Wrapped” report, detailing the most streamed artistes, albums, singles etc. by numbers and Nigeria music industry found some light of success on the platform.

Off the dome, anyone could have guessed which artiste would come out victorious with the most streamed album for the year to be Burna Boy for his “Twice As Tall” album. Burna boy recorded a stunning 64 million streams; a 31 million streams spacing of second placed Wizkid’s fourth studio album “Made In Lagos” which recorded 33 million streams on Spotify.

Nigeria’s first lady in the music industry, Tiwa Savage comes in third position with her “Celia” gathering an impressive 15.1 million streams, although still a wide gap between second placed MIL.

Fast rising R&B act, Omah Lay would secure the fourth place with his debut EP “Get Layd” amassing a nice 10 million streams (not bad for a newbie). The next 3 ranked albums will only be separated by decimals difference as Adekunle Gold’s “Afropop Vol. 1” got 9.6 million streams to close the Top 5 most streamed Nigerian albums on Spotify for 2020.

2Baba’s “Warriors” – 9.18 million streams; OBO Davido’s “A Better Time” with 9.15 million streams. Both albums ranked at the sixth and seventh position respectively on the list.

The closing three albums, eight to tenth would also be ranked based on difference in decimals with Pop and R&B star, Fireboy leading the pack in eight position with 7.93 streams garnered by his sophomore album “Apollo”. Kizz Daniel’s “King Of Love” and Queen of Naija’s In-House music, Niniola’s “Colors & Sounds” raking in 7.69 and 7.61 streams respectively to close the Top 10 most streamed Nigerian albums on Spotify for 2020.

Burna Boy’s “Twice As Tall” Ranks at No. 7 on NY Times ‘Best Album of 2020’

Published

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu keeps reaching new heights and milestones as the days pass by. The self proclaimed African Giant fifth studio-album – “Twice As Tall” was released on August 3rd amid the corona virus but that did not stop it from being massively played and enjoyed by fans of his music all around the world.

The current ranking of albums by American Journalism firm, NY Times is a proof of the above statement. NY Times ranks Burna Boy’s “Twice As Tall” album among their Top 10 albums of 2020, placing it 7th on the list.

The excerpt from NY Times reads: The Nigerian songwriter Burna Boy calls his music Afro-fusion, not the more specifically Nigerian term Afrobeats, and “Twice as Tall” lives up to that broader mandate with a profusion of sleek, diverse, constantly inventive grooves that traverse Africa and its diaspora. Through its 15 songs, Burna Boy is by turns exuberant, pensive, confessional and political. The bitter, furious single he released soon after nonviolent anti-corruption protesters were killed by soldiers, “20 10 20,” made a compelling postscript.

This can be added to the achievement shelf (as it may) for Burna Boy; last week (November 23-29) Burna Boy was nominated a second time in successive years for the Grammy Awards and recently his “Twice As Tall” album became the most streamed Nigerian album on Spotify for this year with over 60 million streams.
