“Meaningful and conscious songs are missing today in the music industry”—African China

Published

on

Nigerian music veteran, African China, famous for tackling the government with his music like in the case of the evergreen “Mr President” and making situational love songs e.g “If You Love Somebody” says the lyricism that comes with the finely produced songs in today’s Nigerian music sector has gone down the drain. Saying he is “disappointed” with how artistes of today approach the lyrical aspect of their music. This he told The Guardian (Nigeria) in an interview.

African China (real name—Chinagorom Onuoha) was asked “What do you think about the music of today?” with regards to the Nigerian music industry, he answered: “I won’t say that I’m sad; I am only disappointed.” he begins with, reckoning “It is either the artistes don’t understand what they are singing or they don’t care about what they serve the public.” Although he gave nod to “Chike and a few others” for taking it upon themselves to produce good music with solid lyrical content. African China even admitted he does not allow his kids listen to the mainstream music from Nigeria because “they are not relevant.”

Meaningful and conscious songs are missing today in the music industry.” African China emphasize while admonishing artistes of this generation to make music with a view of the future as their future kids will definitely listen, beckoning on artistes to improve in their lyricism just like the production has gone up a notch.

“I Am Laycon (The Original Soundtrack)” by Laycon is out

Published

on

Fierce Nation Conny Sir, Laycon joins the league of artistes who put out two albums in a single calendar year with the release of the soundtrack album to his reality TV show which airs on ShowMax—I Am Laycon.

With I Am Laycon, Laycon shows a more reflective side of himself over refined rap lyrics, the braggadocious intro “Filthy” and the third song “Monrovia Hf-531” testifies to that; unlike his debut album, “…Shall We Begin”, which had more upbeat and fast paced tracks, “I Am Laycon” yields more to the mellow midtempo trap-soul side of music but still shows Laycon’s ability to make commercial club records like he did “Underrate” and “B. B. W” exemplifying the Afrorap genre tag he claims to perform.

Finito is the primary record producer on Laycon’s sophomore album just like he was on the first. Speaking on this album, Laycon writes: “The #IALbyLaycon project is a compilation of songs I recorded the moment I came out of the BBNaija house last year. It has been a hectic, fun, challenging, fulfilling, life changing 12 months and what better way to celebrate with my iCONs.”

I Am Laycon comprises 13 different tracks over a 29-minute playtime. Although majorly moody, conveying somber reflection on his journey thus far, relationship issues, career and lifestyle accomplishments, Laycon also gives room for bouncy records to flourish.

Azanti releases self-titled EP, “Azanti”

Published

on

After the successful roll-out and positive reception to 2020’s “YP & Azanti, Vol. 1” with Psycho YP, Azanti is finally ready to spread his tentacles and explore, this he does well in the form of the self-titled debut solo EP—Azanti.

With Azanti, we get to hear and experience Azanti in full form over bouncy Lo-Fi productions expressing his feelings and how he is ready to risk it all for his lover on “Dive” but how location and time might be an hindrance on “Time Difference”. On his first project, Azanti does it all, no features, going with the moody R&B/Soul vibes over mid to slow tempo paced song.

Not all tracks conform to the R&B/Soul tag by the way, Azanti made sure to fill his EP with a variety of other genres, on “Underwater”, there is Dancehall, Pop in the case of “Time Difference”, Afrobeat on the loose track—”Sunmoni” but one thing Azanti clarified (if there was any doubt at all) is his ability to dictate the pace, mood and overall ambience on individual tracks without the necessary help of his fellow Apex Village artistes or anybody at that.

When Azanti is not setting the tone vocally, he is busy flexing his sound engineering skills like he did on “Necessary” and Time Difference”. An impressive debut EP I must say.

Tracklist for “Azanti”.
