Grammys reportedly postponed due to concerns over Covid-19

The 63rd Grammys set to hold on January 31st have been reportedly postponed due to the surge in Covid-19 cases and concerns regarding the deadly pandemic as per Rolling Stone.

The 2021 Grammy Awards will still be held at Staples Center, Los Angeles and Trevor Noah is still set to be host but the rumoured new date seems to be around March 2021 but no official statement has been put out by Recording Academy yet regarding this news. It is still a developing story.

Beyoncé is the most nominated artiste for this year’s edition of the Grammys with 9 nominations while Taylor Swift, Roddy Ricch and Dua Lipa get 6 each.

Nigerian acts in Burna Boy and WizKid also have a nomination each; Burna Boy is seen as early favourite to snatch the Best Global Award for his “Twice As Tall” album and bring it home while Wizkid received his nod via “Black Skin Girls” with Beyoncé, Blue IVY and SAINt JHN, contending for Best Music Video.

Davido performs medley of past and present hits on NPR’s Tiny Desk

National Public Radio (NPR) continue to shine the light on black artistes for Black History Month, having Davido as guest for this week’s edition. Davido honoured the call by performing with his band a medley of hit singles, both past and present.

To kick off his Tiny Desk performance, Davido sang to the beat of ‘Gobe’, the smash hit single from his debut album—‘Omo Baba Olowo’. After the nice intro song, Davido gave an inspiring speech about his father, Adedeji Adeleke, a renowned business mogul who Davido called an inspiration.

“My dad worked at Burger King . . . to become what he’s become as a Black man, starting off in America has been very, very inspiring to me” Davido applauds his father’s work ethic and competitive drive.

After the speech, Davido continues to thrill viewers with his performance, transitioning from one hit to another from ‘Aye’ to ‘Risky’ and finally ending with ‘Jowo’ off his recent album—‘A Better Time’.

“I’m still a sugar baby” – Joeboy confesses to having a sugar mummy

She up in my yard / Calling my phone / She tell me she love me say she no go let me go” Joeboy begins on the track ‘Sugar Mama” and true to his words, he confesses on Lagos-based Nigerian radio station, THE BEAT 99.9 FM, about his love life, admitting boldly and proudly—“I have a sugar mummy.”

The prompt to Joeboy admitting this was when asked about his relationship status, Joeboy says: “right now I’m single but I’m not searching. I have a lot of female friends”

Adding to the response, Joeboy continues: “She only call me when she wants to have . . .” he stops without completing the sentence. Asked by the OAP: “but are you complaining?” His response? “No I like it.”

“I have a sugar mummy . . . It’s really really dope . . . it’s fun” Joeboy says after admitting “I’m still a sugar baby”  while making it known the song – ‘Sugar Mama’ – is based on “true life story.” Although choosing to keep the identity of his sugar mummy a secret, he did flex, “She met me” when asked “how did you meet her?”

AQ told me to sign Blaqbonez – MI

Chocolate City founder and president, Jude “MI” Abaga has without a doubt shown he can hold the rap game for as long as he wants and still remain one of the top music label, heads in the country with Chocolate City. MI once more showed his brilliance in being a good music label head and good talent scout, using his Twitter page as the medium through which he shared how having a meeting with AQ back in 2015 led to him signing ‘BBC’ rapper, Blaqbonez.

In the tweet, MI said “Oct[ober] 15, [2015]” marked the beginning of “an amazing partnership” with Nigeria rap veteran, AQ, who during the course of the meeting let go of the “opportunity” meant for him for the sake of Blaqbonez’s blooming yet upcoming career (as at 2015) in the music industry.

MI explains that after pitching ideas to AQ in that October 15, 2015 meeting, “he [AQ] listened n said M I’m grateful but d person u should give this opportunity to is @BlaqBonez. [sic]” The result? MI continues, “[I] signed Blaq a year later.”

And the rest is history! AQ has gone to make one of the best discography in Nigerian rap sector, even releasing ‘God’s Engineering’, the most critically acclaimed rap album of 2020 which earned him the award for ‘Best Rap Album” at The Headies 2020

Blaqbonez’s not only shown he can outrap anyone at will but also carved a niche for himself, becoming a comical act on social media. Adding to that Blaqbonez has also shown he can self PR his work and still get massive recognition for it.

It goes without saying that MI made a very wise decision in forming the partnership with AQ while heeding to AQ’s advice about signing Blaqbonez.
